A Chara

This month we have an election, young professionals, whiskey and a radio broadcast.

Not to mention the event of the year (possibly,) and a more serious look at Hong Kong and business prospects.

So in no particular order, let’s first take a quick look at the highlights of November.

November in Hong Kong

Thanks to the hard work of chamber board member and all-round nice person Nikita Leung, we held an exciting evening of networking at the Irish Chamber's Young Professional pre-Christmas Drinks!

Held at Cafe Claude, feedback was brilliant and everyone enjoyed the chance make new friends and expand their professional network in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

We look forward to many more such evenings.

Earlier in the month, our very own Padraig Seif was interviewed on RTHK about prospects for Irish businesses in Hong Kong.

The broadcast went out on November 15, but you can catch up with a recording here:

Always keen to promote the best of Ireland (and NOT just trying to get some freebies, we deny that categorically,) the Chamber partnered with the Consulate General of Ireland and the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA) to present a unique Irish Whiskey tasting reception featuring four of Ireland’s new generation of distilleries:

, Ireland’s first zero emissions whiskey and gin distillery located in the heart of County Galway.
situated on Ireland's southwest coast specializing in single pot still whiskey.
takes its inspiration from the majestic surroundings of their home in Wicklow.
combining tradition with modern technology to forge connections from its home in Lanesborough across Ireland and beyond.

The event went down extremely well (no pun intended … well, yes, a bit intentional) and helped introduce people to the distinctive taste that is Irish whiskey and why it’s spelt with an ‘e’.

All this and an election
image
Now you may have heard, Ireland just had an election.

The outcome was something of a massacre for the Green Party who lost virtually all their seats.

Fianna Fáil won 48 seats, followed by Sinn Féin with 39, Fine Gael 38, Labour 11, Social Democrats 11, Independents 21, People Before Profit Solidarity 3, Aontú 2 and the Green Party just 1.

With Fianna Fáil now the largest party in the Dáil, a likely outcome could be a coalition with Fine Gael, but there are concerns in Fine Gael that Fianna Fáil might use it larger numbers to squeeze any coalition partner over new government programmes.

It’s thought a continuation of the rotating taoiseach arrangement and near parity in cabinet will be red lines for Fine Gael, although the two leaders have yet to meet, and any possible deal making remains speculative.

With a growing sense in both parties that Labour may be hard to persuade to join a coalition, there is a growing focus on Independents who might be prepared to support it.

We’ll keep you informed of how things develop.

This is an important time for Ireland given the possible disruption to trade following the US election, but it’s also potentially a bonus for trade in this region.

Coming Up

It’s almost upon us.

The event of the year.

The one where people sell their children so they can raise money to buy tickets.
The place where everyone needs to be.

But so much for that.

We’ve also got the Chamber’s Annual Christmas Lunch!

Now you probably wouldn’t sell the kiddies to get in, but if you enjoy good company, excellent food, a free-flow bar, a stunning location, and the chance to win some seriously good prizes, this is one not to be missed.

Tickets are few and far between, but if you hurry you might get lucky.
