April and May 2025 Newsletter

A Chara

We have to start this newsletter with an apology.

This is actually the April newsletter and the reason it’s late is due to our regular editor/writer/literary whatsit being ill.

At least that’s what he claims. It may just have been an extended holiday. We are investigating.

Anyway rather than not put out anything, he has crawled, moaning and bleating, from his sick bed to pen this shorter version.

We feel this is important not only for our regular readers in and around Hong Kong, but because we have discovered we now have readers on all seven continents, including Antarctica.

This last was something of a surprise because it’s quite cold there as our picture shows.

We don’t know who this reader is, but we would love to find out, so if they’re reading this, please drop us an email

April in Hong Kong

The main Chambers event of the month was the Young Professionals networking drinks.

Back by popular demand, the event featured three-hour free-flow drinks, and gave everyone a chance to make new friends, expand their network, and enjoy some great conversations.

By all accounts, everyone had a great time and another gathering is definitely in the offing.

April also had a couple of other significant dates which the history buffs among you might already know.

Of course, we’re all familiar with the Easter Rising on 24th April, 1916, but April also sees a less well-known anniversary.

On 18th April 1949 Ireland formally became a Republic following the passage of the Republic of Ireland Act in 1948.

Interestingly, the act doesn’t name the state as a republic but says “the description of the State shall be the Republic of Ireland.”

That’s because to do so would have conflicted with the constitution, adopted in 1937, which says "the name of the State is Éire, or, in the English language, Ireland."

So there you go. Next April you can celebrate two events and Easter. Who says we don’t spoil you!
